Gematik, which is responsible for the digitalization of the healthcare system, has granted approval for the first “Health ID”. As already announced, T-Systems and the ID wallet provider Verimi have developed the digital identity for the 8.7 million insured people of the Barmer health insurance company “in close coordination with Gematik”. The Health ID is the electronic identity (eID) in the healthcare system, which can be used for authentication instead of the electronic health card (eGK), for example. Insured people can then log in to services such as the electronic patient file or the e-prescription via their smartphone without an eGK.

Other health insurance companies such as AOK are also currently working on providing the legally required digital identity by 2024. However, AOK wants to go beyond this with its solution. By the end of 2024, it wants to “provide a solution for AOK-specific applications in addition to the legally required basis” and thus create a “foundation for the use of a digital health ecosystem”.
eID requirement from 2024
Insured persons can use the digital identity required from January 2024 on a voluntary basis. The Association of Private Health Insurance Companies had already concluded contracts with IBM Deutschland GmbH and RISE. The digital identities should actually have been available by January 1, 2023, but the deadlines had been postponed because there was still a need for coordination. Gematik GmbH is responsible for the specification of digital identities in healthcare, which will be published at the beginning of 2023. In the future, other service providers such as doctors, practices and hospitals should also be able to use digital identities with the further development of the telematics infrastructure, i.e. the health network.
