How can displays present 3D content convincingly? The pursuit of three-dimensional content is not new and continues to hit a wall, most recently with 3D televisions. At the same time, VR glasses put the screen directly in front of the eyes and bring the wearer into a 3D world, but usually with side effects from prolonged use. With the Vision Pro, Apple wants to make all computer work spatial and connect the physical environment with digital content.

In episode 12 of TNBT, Leo Becker talks to Ulrike Kuhlmann, display expert at c’t, about display technology: It’s about the older approaches to displaying 3D on televisions and exciting developments such as light field displays, each with their own Advantages and disadvantages. We are also concerned about the Vision Pro’s unusual external display, which is more of a disadvantage for the wearer of the headset due to additional weight, a higher price and shorter battery life. However, the other person sees a digital representation of the eyes – and as realistically as possible from different perspectives.
The difference between micro-OLEDs, which Apple uses for the Vision Pro, and micro-LEDs is also an issue and why the latter technology is likely to be crucial for AR glasses in the future.
