The Gynecology team at the Gipuzkoa Polyclinic has removed a 30-centimeter, 8-kilogram ovarian cyst from a 63-year-old woman. The intervention was performed this Monday by Dr. Koldo Carbonero, who explained that it is the largest ovarian cyst that he has removed in his 40-year career, the Quironsalud group has reported.
“The recovery prognosis is very satisfactory for the patient; we estimate that in a month she will be able to return to a normal life,” added the surgeon.
The patient is in good health and is expected to be discharged in the coming days, after 90 minutes of surgery that “was not complex.” Carbonero explained that the patient was referred from another consultation, since the doctor observed “a giant abdominal tumor.”
“We were surprised by its magnitude, because the abdominal mass seemed equivalent to a 36-week gestation,” added the doctor, who recalls that an ovary of a menopausal woman “can measure 16 millimeters and this one measured 30 centimeters.”
The medical center has noted that many benign ovarian cysts are asymptomatic and are discovered accidentally during medical examinations.
What is an ovarian tumor?
An ovarian tumor is the presence of a mass or abnormal growth in one or both ovaries. “It is important to note that many benign ovarian cysts are asymptomatic and are discovered accidentally during medical examinations. For this reason, it is very important to go for a periodic check-up, which allows for an early diagnosis and prevents the tumor from reaching a size like the one in this case,” said Carbonero.
He also explained that the patient was referred to the clinic from another clinic, since during the medical evaluation, the doctor detected a giant abdominal tumor and decided to refer him to the service. He was surprised by the magnitude it had, since the abdominal mass seemed equivalent to a 36-week gestation. The size of the cyst is the most significant thing in this case, since an ovary of a menopausal woman can measure 16 millimeters and this average 30 centimeters.
The patient, a 63-year-old woman from Guipuzcoa, is in very good health and is expected to be discharged in the coming days. «The surgery lasted 90 minutes, was not complex and the recovery prognosis is very satisfactory for the patient. They estimate that in a month she will return to her normal life,” added Dr. Ysmael Álvarez.
