Last night, the Gautegiz Arteaga station (Busturialdea) collected 23.7 liters per square meter in 30 minutes. Today, starting at 3:00 p.m., the entire Basque Country will be under a yellow warning due to heavy rainfall.
The heavy rainfall and the electrical storm that hit Bizkaia last night forced seven flights to be diverted from Bilbao Airport to other aerodromes, as AENA informed EITB Media. Today, Monday, there are no incidents and it operates normally.
Specifically, flights to or from Palma, Porto, Seville, London, Menorca, Prague and Paris were diverted. Three were assigned to Barcelona, two to Santander, one to Biarritz and another to Lourdes.
The showers fell heavily in the west of the Biscayan territory, and several meteorological stations recorded a large amount of rain. In Gautegiz Arteaga, in Busturialdea, 23.7 liters per square meter were collected, according to data provided by Euskalmet.
At 7:00 p.m., heavy showers were recorded at the Zalla station with 15.6 l/m² collected in one hour and at Galindo station, 15.9 l/m².
Dozens of interventions due to pools of water and lightning strikes
Bilbao and its surroundings also recorded heavy rains that left pools of water everywhere.
They also had to bail out water in Leioa and deal with a lightning strike at a gas station in Portugalete. In Bilbao, the power went out in several buildings, including EITB for a few minutes, and the sky was colored with lightning bolts.

New yellow warnings due to heavy rainfall
Given the forecast that showers may occur again today, the Security Department of the Basque Government will activate a new yellow warning (from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.) due to intense rainfall throughout the BAC. 15 l/m² could be exceeded in one hour. Euskamet forecasts moderate and stormy showers, which locally could be strong and with the possibility of hail (2-3 cm). In stormy areas, strong gusts of wind are expected that could be around 60-80 km/h.
For its part, the Spanish meteorological agency, Aemet, has also issued warnings for rain (15 liters per square meter can accumulate in one hour) and storms, which may be accompanied by hail and very strong gusts of wind, from 2:00 p.m.: 00 hours until midnight.
Likewise, Iparralde will be under a yellow warning for storms.
