The upcoming campaign for the European elections outlines a disturbing political panorama. Meloni’s pragmatism, more desired than real, creates the mirage that the entry of essentialist and sovereignist populism into European governments may not be so problematic because, after all, to avoid problems with Brussels, Meloni seems to have changed his economic language. While we console ourselves with that, another far-right, Marine Le Pen, crouched waiting for her chance to seize the Élysée, which raises an urgent question: will the civic idea of Europe, inseparable from the spirit of a federal union, survive the overthrow of two women? ultras at the head of two founding countries of the EU? Both defend a white Europe of nations, and it is inevitable to remember the contribution to the European dream of other women, such as Ursula Hirschmann, a Berliner born in 1913, anti-fascist, feminist and social democrat, and co-founder of the European Federalist Movement.
