Spanish aid worker Emma Igual, 32, director of the NGO Road to Relief, dies in a Russian attack on her convoy in Ukraine. This has been confirmed by the acting Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, José Manuel Albares. This would be the first Spanish victim in the Ukrainian war.

In statements to the media in New Delhi, where he is attending the G20 summit, Albares specified that the Government of Spain has received “verbal confirmation” of the death of the Spanish aid worker when a projectile fell on a vehicle in the one who was traveling in Ukraine and has indicated that they are now waiting for “a certified confirmation from the Ukrainian authorities.”

The NGO for which the aid worker worked has reported through its Instagram account that the vehicle in which four members of her team were traveling from Sloviansk to Bakhmut to assess the needs of civilians caught in the crossfire in the city of Ivanivske, received a Russian attack on Saturday morning.

In the vehicle were the German medical volunteer Ruben Mawick, the Swedish volunteer Johan Mathias Thyr, the Canadian Anthony ‘Tonko’ Ihnat and the Spanish volunteer Emma Igual.

According to the first information from the NGO, the first two volunteers were injured, while the Canadian aid worker had been confirmed and Igual’s condition was unknown.

Road to Relief

She was also the director and co-founder of Road to Relief, an NGO that since 2022 has been helping in Ukraine by evacuating civilians from the front and delivering humanitarian aid in the areas most affected by the war.

The missions of the NGO in which the dead Spanish aid worker worked entailed a certain danger since they entered high-risk areas due to Russian bombings.

Road To Relief received requests for help from the Ukrainian population themselves who were on the front lines after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Bolaños charges against Putin

The acting Minister of the Presidency, Félix Bolaños, has conveyed the Government’s condolences to the family of the Spanish aid worker killed in the attack with a Russian projectile against the vehicle in which she was traveling in Ukraine, and has stated: “We will never forgive her.” “to Putin the pain he is causing.”

Bolaños began his speech at an event in Alcorcón (Madrid) with which the Madrid socialists began the political course, condemning the “brutal Russian attack” that ended the life of this Spanish aid worker and sending all their solidarity and affection to the Moroccan people after the devastating earthquake that has already left more than 2,000 dead.

“We will never forgive Putin for the pain he is causing, which is now demonstrated with the death of this Spanish aid worker, but with the thousands of innocent victims that Putin has caused with that unjust and inexplicable war that he has caused in Ukraine,” he assured. the acting minister before conveying all his affection to the family and friends of the deceased.
