Four young people died this Sunday night when they were hit by a Cercanías train near the Montmeló station (Barcelona). The event occurred around 8:30 p.m., when a train on line R3 – which covers the route between Barcelona and Puigcerdà – ran over several people who were crossing the tracks “at an unauthorized point, on a curve and with difficult visibility”, according to Renfe has reported. The crash occurred, according to police sources, very close to the Montmeló station; From there, the young people headed to a music concert at the Circuit de Catalunya, which hosts Formula 1 and motorcycling races.
Civil Protection has confirmed, around 10:10 p.m., that the four young people who were run over have died. These are three boys and a girl who were crossing the tracks to attend the Duro Festival, a techno music event that was held this Sunday. The emergency services have tried to save the life of one of the young people, who was in critical condition but “in cardiorespiratory arrest”; Within a few minutes, however, he died.
Renfe and Adif have highlighted that the impact “could not be avoided.” The train has been stopped, waiting for what the police authorities determine. Alternative road service is being arranged for passengers on the affected train.
