The absence due to covid of Pedro Sánchez at the G-20 summit in New Delhi, the capital of India, has not reduced the interest that the leaders have in the political future of Spain, which came to this summit with an acting government and the question about the continuity of the president. The first vice president, Nadia Calviño, who headed the Spanish delegation, has admitted that several leaders of other countries have asked her in these three days about the political future of Spain, given the possibility that there would be an electoral repetition and Sánchez would not be able to continue.
Calviño, who always maintains his technical profile and avoids entering into political issues, although lately he has begun to change his image, has told journalists that he has conveyed to all the leaders his absolute confidence that Sánchez will achieve the investiture and therefore, He will continue to lead the Government as Spain’s highest representative in these international forums, where the president moves with comfort and much less criticism than he experiences in Spain.
“In these days two questions have been repeated,” Calviño explained. “One, how is Sánchez, and I have explained to them that he is fine, and that we hope to put this covid diagnosis behind us as soon as possible. They have all conveyed messages to me in an affectionate way towards the president ”. And the other question, more in depth, is what is going to happen in Spain with the investiture. “I have had the opportunity to explain to them that we are awaiting the appearance of (Alberto Núñez) Feijóo, who has to explain to the Spaniards what his project is and see what support he has, that everything indicates that he will not have enough. And immediately afterwards we will get underway to establish a Government of Pedro Sánchez with a progressive agenda, of harmony, of coexistence”, explained the vice president.
“I have shared with them a message of confidence that the next Government of Spain will be led by Pedro Sánchez, and, therefore, a message of confidence for all international partners and allies regarding the continuity of the Spanish policy that has given us “It has allowed us to reinforce Spain’s role in all international forums and position ourselves as a country with great leadership in debates such as climate change, digitalization or the search for a framework for just and lasting peace in Ukraine,” he concluded.
The Spanish delegation maintains that Sánchez is appreciated in the international community, who has a clear commitment in favor of multilateralism, and that is why there was concern about a possible change of line in Spain. That is why Calviño insists to all of his interlocutors that Sánchez will safely achieve the investiture, although he still has a complex negotiation with Junts and the partners of the previous legislature ahead of him to obtain it.
