Fifty years after the death of Salvador Allende, on that fateful September 11, 1973, Gabriel Boric, the current Chilean president, claims his heritage and makes his way as one of the most relevant figures of the new Latin American left. It is almost inevitable, therefore, to investigate what remains of that legacy, how the new is similar to the old. Difficult operation if ever there was one, because, to begin with, the figure of Allende is shrouded in myth. A myth, by the way, that was established more by his suicide during the siege of Pinochet’s troops on the La Moneda palace than by his specific policies, completely frustrated by the military coup. And for that moving final speech: “These are my last words. I am certain that my sacrifice will not be in vain. I am certain that at least it will be a moral lesson that will punish felony, cowardice and treason.”
