Apple is apparently not only planning a major sustainability change in its cases for the iPhone 15, but also in the popular bracelets for its Apple Watch. As Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, who has good contacts at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, writes on All animal products will soon be eliminated there too. “I expect that Apple will also move away from leather for the Apple Watch straps.”

“FineWoven” – made of plastic?
Apple is said to want to switch to a woven material called “FineWoven” for iPhone cases, it was previously reported from Asia. The new cases consist of a rubber-like edge with a back that looks like suede, at least from a distance. This should also make it possible to produce Apple Watch bracelets. Pictures of this have already appeared in China – although they are probably fake.
Apple will apparently present the move away from leather, whose carbon footprint is not particularly good, as part of a larger sustainability initiative. “Between the new Apple Watch and the move away from leather on iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands, I expect environment/sustainability to play a larger role than usual at the September 12 event,” claims Gurman in another message.
What happens to the luxury collaboration?
If Apple actually relies fully on the vegan trend, the question arises as to what will happen to the long-standing cooperation with the French luxury label Hermès. This supplies leather bracelets specifically for the Apple Watch, and there are also Apple’s own models of computer watches with the company’s logo and special dials. Most of the products for the Apple Watch that come from Hermès use leather.
According to Gurman, it is still unclear whether Apple will completely withdraw from the collaboration. However, there is currently an internal sale of several tapes. These are reportedly being sold to Apple employees at a discount of up to 90 percent. One of the bracelets that normally costs $850 is now available for $85. However, Apple apparently also sells its own bracelets internally, including Solo Loops and accessories such as MagSafe chargers.
