AMD’s latest RDNA3 models, the Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7700 XT, are in stores today. The weaker model 7700 XT is only available from board partners starting at around 490 euros, including, as usual, Asus, Asrock, Gigabyte, Powercolor, Sapphire and XFX. The faster Radeon RX 7800 XT is available from around 550 euros and is also available directly from AMD in a subtle black reference version. We have already tested these and a 7700 XT Pulse from Sapphire.
With 12 GB of graphics memory, the Radeon RX 7700 XT is intended to put Nvidia’s GeForce RTX 4060 Ti under pressure: Most versions of the RTX 4060 Ti only have 8 GB of memory, and only thanks to a last-minute price reduction are the 16 GB versions from around 460 to have euros. The Radeon RX 7800 XT for 550 euros has to compete with Nvidia’s more expensive GeForce RTX 4070 and on paper it has a thicker memory cushion at 16 to 12 GB. AMD also wants to make the graphics cards attractive to customers with a “Starfield” bundle, which is also officially premiering today.
Like all RDNA3 models, the new Radeon graphics cards are compatible with DirectX 12 Ultimate including DirectML as well as Vulkan, OpenCL and OpenGL. They also master ray tracing in hardware. The display engine supports DisplayPort 2.1 and HDMI 2.1, so that high refresh rates in resolutions beyond 4K are possible even without color compression – around four times 4K144 or once 8K165, if there are corresponding screens. The video hardware is also state-of-the-art; In addition to H.265 and VP, the decoders and encoders also support the modern, license-free AV1.
