A part of the roof of the Defensora theater in Sóller, currently under construction, suffered a collapse this Tuesday, without causing personal injury, caused by the collapse of the roof vault and part of the building’s façade.
As reported by the Mallorca Fire Department, the notice was received at 9:47 a.m. and members of the force were sent to the scene. A municipal technical architect has also moved to the area.
For its part, the Sóller Local Police has indicated that the place is cordoned off until security is confirmed.
It should be noted that the infrastructure has been undergoing renovations for about two years and the collapse occurred on the roof, specifically on the old roof that had not yet been rehabilitated.
Today, Mallorca Firefighters will carry out a controlled demolition of the remaining elements of the now defunct Defensora Sollerense theater. The president of the Sollerense Defense Society, Jaume Casasnovas, has described the events as “a great shame”, while ensuring that “for 24 years the theater was in a precarious situation.”
The spokesperson for Més per Sóller, Laura Celià, in statements to Sa Veu, regretted that “the material damage is evident and is very painful”, and has also advanced that “from our group we will be forceful in demanding responsibilities in the face of this very sad news.”
The collapse did not cause any personal injury even though two people were at the foot of the building when it occurred.
The Teatro Defensora de Sóller, or Defensora Sollerense, stands out for its dimensions. It was the scene of all types of events and social events in Sóller in times past. In 1999 it was transferred to the City Council with the purpose of rehabilitating it and converting it into a municipal auditorium. Paralyzed for years, the reform project has recently been revived and was currently undergoing rehabilitation works. The works were stopped shortly before the municipal elections after having made an investment of 600,000 euros. Since 2019, the building had part of the roof uncovered, which could have been the cause of the collapse.
The rehabilitation of the theater was intended to provide Sóller with a new modern infrastructure in accordance with the needs of the town.
