It happened last Sunday early morning. A 46-year-old man with no medical history suffered cardiorespiratory arrest after consuming a large amount of drugs in a sauna known for several incidents in recent years. The one last weekend was the umpteenth altercation in a long list, which is why, as OKDIARIO has learned from official sources, the Madrid Prosecutor’s Office has put the establishment in the spotlight. He wants to close the activity. The first preliminary proceedings are carried out in court number 27 of Plaza de Castilla with procedure 1583/2020.
There are several events in which this establishment located on Norte Street, in the Malasaña neighborhood, has been involved. On January 1 of this year, the National Police arrested 17 users for trafficking or possession of drugs, after receiving various information that narcotic substances could be sold inside taking advantage of the Christmas holidays. Those arrested were men between 28 and 47 years old, from countries as different as Brazil, Lebanon, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Venezuela, Panama and Peru.
These dealers, as retail sellers of narcotic substances are commonly known, carried cash and various drugs prepared for distribution, such as ecstasy, GHB, methamphetamines, mephedrone and stimulant pills.
Three years ago, on September 13, 2020, eight more people were arrested for the same crime against public health. The prosecutor in charge of the case has the sauna in focus, since according to the same sources “they do not collaborate” with the case. Therefore, knowing the great marketing that there is with illegal substances inside, and the lack of collaboration of those responsible to reach the large sellers who distribute the material to retailers, the official threatens to close the store.
If the closure occurs, it would not be the first time this would happen. In May 2022, the Health Department of the Community of Madrid ordered the closure of this sauna for several weeks as it was the initial focus of the monkeypox outbreak registered in the region. The store reopened with increased security measures days before the celebration of Madrid Pride, one of the dates on which it achieves a greater volume of business.
In the midst of the pandemic, on January 1, 2021, the Municipal Police evacuated the sauna due to excess capacity and because the people inside did not respect the safety distance or the use of masks. In addition, some customers smoked and the establishment had a bar that dispensed alcoholic beverages despite not having a license. It continues to operate today, although this newspaper has not been able to confirm whether it already has said license. The same thing happened months before when the agents denounced the majority of the hundred attendees at the Madrid sauna for not wearing a mask and the establishment for exceeding the capacity.
Overdose
The latest episode that has placed this Madrid sauna back in the spotlight is the police and medical action that occurred last Sunday as a result of the overdose suffered by a client. The events took place at 8:30 a.m. on the 27th at this location located on Norte Street in Madrid, a time of great influx of people arriving after the closing of the nightclubs on Saturday night. After plummeting to the ground and not reacting, the store’s employees called the emergency services.
The first to arrive at the scene were agents of the National Police, who performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation maneuvers on the individual, reversing the stop, although since there was no complaint they did not continue investigating what happened, according to police sources consulted by OKDIARIO. The assistance was continued by the Samur-Civil Protection paramedics, who came with four ambulances and two mobile UVIs. The man was admitted in a very serious condition, apparently due to excessive cocaine consumption, to the Intensive Care Unit of the Jiménez Díaz Foundation. During the week his health has evolved favorably and he is already on the ward.
