The Powertoys project has released version 0.73.0 of the handy tool collection for Windows. They correct and optimize many small things in the updated version. A new feature is also on board, “Crop and Lock”.

Powertoys 0.73.0 brings the new “Crop and Lock” function. It only shows a section of an application without the possibility of interaction or replaces the original window with the selected section.

The developers highlight a few changes in their release notes. The most noticeable innovation is of course the “Crop and Lock” function. To use it, users have to click on the desired window and then press one of two possible key combinations.
Thumbnail mode (“thumbnail shortcut”), selected by default with Win+Ctrl+Shift+T, creates a window with the selected region of the original window. All changes are displayed in the original, but the application cannot be controlled with this. This mode has higher compatibility with more applications.
Powertoys crop and lock feature with multiple modes
The keyboard shortcut Win+Ctrl+Shift+R, on the other hand, calls up the “Reparent” mode of “Crop and Lock”. This means that the new window replaces the original one and only shows the selected section. This means that users can also interact normally. After closing the “cropped window,” the app’s original window appears again, the programmers explain in a post.
Keyboard Manager now also supports the numeric keypad for hotkey assignments. The developers have improved and refactored the program code for FancyZones. Image resizing now delivers a more modern user experience. In addition, the Windows shell extension PowerRename can offer extended counting functions.

At the beginning of August, the Powertoys project released version 0.72.0 of the tool collection. This enabled them, among other things, to significantly reduce the storage space requirement.
