Smartphone manufacturer Honor is now selling its foldable flagship “Magic V2” outside of China. “We want to bring foldables into the mainstream,” said Honor CEO George Zhao at the start of the IFA on Friday in Berlin. At the fair, the former Huawei subsidiary also shows the design study “V Purse”, which plays with the possibilities of foldable displays. While the really slim folding smartphone Honor Magic V2 is scheduled to come to Germany in the first quarter of 2024, the wallet will probably remain a gimmick.

With the Magic V2, Honor solves a problem that makes the competition’s folding smartphones seem bulky: When folded, the devices from Google and Samsung are well over 10 millimeters thick and are therefore a significant departure from what you are used to from simple top-of-the-line smartphones . The Honor Magic V2 undercuts this mark for the first time and, at 9.9 millimeters, is by far the thinnest folding smartphone on the market – albeit with a visible hump for the camera module.
Almost a normal phone
At 231 grams, the V2 is also lighter than the competition. When folded, it can be used like a conventional smartphone. The front OLED display measures 6.4 inches diagonally with an aspect ratio of 20:9. The interior display in 10:9 format, also made using OLED technology, measures 7.92 inches diagonally. Both screens create a refresh rate of up to 120 Hertz.
The thin design of the two halves is made possible primarily by thinner batteries. The total capacity of 5000 mAh is divided between the two halves. In the case halves, which are only 4.7 millimeters thick, Honor uses two special, just 2.7 millimeters thick batteries with anodes made of silicon and carbon instead of graphite, which are said to have a higher energy density. However, you have to do without wireless charging.

Coming in January 2024

After the market launch in China, Honor is now planning some European markets for the beginning of 2024. The manufacturer does not want to give an exact date and Honor is also silent about the price. Since the manufacturer explicitly wants to compete with Samsung’s Fold series, this should also apply to the price league in which the Magic V2 plays. Don’t expect a bargain.
The “Honor V Purse” design study, a folding device in which the display is on the outside and which can be carried on a chain like a bag, is not going on sale for the time being. The motif of the necklace, for example, or colorful designs are then shown on the display.

The manufacturer underlines the fact that the “Purse” is more of a fashion accessory than an everyday smartphone with a small fashion show at the IFA stand, where some models presented the display bags.
The “Purse” puts question marks in the faces of many technology-loving IFA visitors. What’s the use of a purse where you can’t store anything? While this is a legitimate criticism from a practical perspective, one could also argue that Honor is reducing classic accessories such as clutches to their essence: it’s all about the external impact.
