Mercadona has launched its sixth exclusive logistics platform for online sales in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid) with the aim of “continuing to consolidate its online shopping project”, according to the supermarket chain in a statement. The investment in this new hive —as the company calls these digitized warehouses to facilitate online orders— amounts to 13.2 million euros and the workforce will initially consist of 150 workers. The company has also announced that it has begun to sell products from its Ready to Eat ready-to-eat offer online, such as tortillas or Russian salad.
With this new platform, Mercadona reinforces the online sales service in Madrid, where it already has another, larger warehouse in Getafe, since 2020. The rest are in Valencia, Barcelona, Alicante and Seville. The Getafe platform will serve the towns of Boadilla del Monte, Alcorcón and Villaviciosa de Odón, and will later be extended to other areas of the Community of Madrid such as Leganés, Parla or Tres Cantos. The company thus reinforces its strategy of concentrating Internet sales in specific stores in places with the most orders to facilitate processes. On the other hand, for areas with a lower concentration of orders, it has a preparation and delivery model from the stores
The general director of Mercadona Online, Juana Roig, highlighted in the statement that “with this hive in Boadilla we extend the new online purchase to more customers in the Community of Madrid, which is one of our main markets.” According to the company, its online sales project currently has 2,700 workers, while this channel registered a turnover of 540 million euros in 2022, 2% of total turnover.
