The investiture of Alberto Núñez Feijóo is going to simmer. “There is no rush,” they acknowledge at the PP headquarters. The leader of the PP has to fill almost an entire month with political content until his investiture is held, on September 26 and 27, which will decline unless surprised. Those four weeks can be long if, from the beginning, Feijóo finds that he has no support, so the tactic is to delay the negotiations as much as possible. The first movement that the PP has made is to request a meeting between Feijóo and Pedro Sánchez, which the acting president and socialist leader has accepted, and which will occupy the first phase of the negotiation, although nobody expects anything from that meeting, not even in the PSOE. nor in the PP. Later, the round of contacts with the parties will come, for which there is still no date or first date. And Feijóo has added to his plan, in addition, another round of conversations with all the regional presidents, despite the fact that they have no role in the vote.
Feijóo has defined two paths for the talks aimed at negotiating his investiture. He will lead one himself, and at the moment he only has a meeting with Sánchez on the agenda (in the absence of specifying the date). The other will be led by the popular parliamentary group in Congress, in whom the negotiation will be carried out with the rest of the groups represented in the Lower House, except for EH Bildu, whom the PP excludes as an interlocutor. This formula allows Feijóo to avoid the uncomfortable photo with Junts, which is causing internal tensions with the PP of Catalonia and which causes reluctance in a part of the right. There is still no date for any meeting: the PP is not urgent to have a closed calendar anymore because it is most likely that none of these conversations will come to fruition.
The PP has also opened its contacts to all the regional presidents, “to find out their requirements and needs,” said the executive’s spokesman, Borja Sémper, yesterday, who specified that the president of Catalonia, Pere Aragonés, from ERC, will also be included . Popular sources do not clarify at the moment if it will be Feijóo who will speak with all the presidents – the majority, eleven out of 17, are from the PP, in addition to the presidents of the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla – nor the format of the round, but in the PP do not speak of meetings, but simply of “contacts”. The talks with the territorial barons, who have no say in an investiture, are designed to fill four long weeks with content.
In the negotiation, Feijóo has given priority to the meeting with Sánchez. The PP now defends “exploring formulas to give stability to the country” with the PSOE, after having pivoted its campaign for the general elections on the proposal to “repeal sanchismo”. The popular ones know, however, that there is nothing to do with the PSOE, but their intention is to transfer all the pressure they can to the Socialists, whom they believe this investiture process for Feijóo can wear down.
The biggest risk for Feijóo is the negotiation with Junts, which in Genoa they defend openly. Popular leadership sources explain that with the talks with the independence party led by former president Carles Puigdemont they seek, first of all, to “do politics.” That is, to explore what possibilities there are that this formation, which would only have to abstain from Feijóo’s inauguration, could consider it a strategic interest. The PP intends to explain to Junts that it would achieve more prominence and political capacity with a Feijóo government than with one of Sánchez, because in the case of the progressive Executive, the popular supporters maintain, as ERC also appears in the equation, the Republicans end up capitalizing on the result of the negotiations. Instead, they argue, ERC would be left out with Feijóo and Junts could have the upper hand.
The popular leadership insists that Feijóo would in no case grant Junts an amnesty law or any other type of penal relief to those involved in the process who still have pending trials, as the spokesman for the party rejected “outright and forceful”. executive, Borja Sémper, at a press conference in Genoa this Monday. The PP also voted yesterday at the Congress Table against Junts and ERC forming their own group thanks to the transfer of deputies from the PSOE and Sumar, while in the Senate, where the decision is solely theirs because it controls the Table, they have asked first a report to the lawyers.

But the talks with Junts also have another objective for Feijóo, they acknowledge in Genoa, which is to “increase the price” of the match between Pugidemont and Sánchez. The purpose, ultimately, if the inauguration of the PP leader fails, as is most likely, is to prop up the story that Sánchez becomes president for “giving up what Feijóo did not give up,” they explain in the PP. That story is going to simmer.
