The mayor of El Ejido (Almería), Francisco Góngora (PP), has demanded this Monday that the Government Sub-delegation “increase security” and “reinforce” the media along the entire ejido coast in the face of the “continuous arrival” of illegal immigrants “crammed into boats”, with the consequent “collapse” of police forces.
The popular councilor has highlighted in a statement that the arrivals of this type of inflatable boats have skyrocketed “with dozens of illegal immigrants” on board “who disembark on the beaches of our municipality, generating a social alarm among the neighbors.”
Likewise, Góngora has denounced the “collapse” suffered by the “police operational services”, since they are forced to attend to the arrival of boats in addition to facing “their usual citizen security functions”, for which they cannot cope.
The mayor has asked the Government, “which is the one who has the powers in this matter”, to adopt “measures and solutions” to this “alarming problem” and to deploy the “necessary means to guarantee the security and tranquility of the ejidenses ».
Likewise, the mayor has requested information on whether the Maritime Rescue and Civil Guard services, through the Integrated External Surveillance System (SIVE), “are detecting” this type of vessel at sea or near the coast.
Góngora has also requested data to clarify “what is being done with the immigrants who come ashore.” Finally, the mayor of El Ejido has demanded to know if there is “capacity” in the detention centers for foreigners (CIE), as well as the measures that are being adopted “to guarantee the detention, detention and opening of the expulsion and repatriation file » of immigrants arriving irregularly.
This demand is added to that of other mayors of the Almeria province, such as Adra, Manuel Cortés (PP), who for weeks reiterated his request to reinforce security on the coast in the face of the “massive” arrival of small boats and in order to “continue guaranteeing the security and tranquility of the neighbours. On August 11, the City Council convened a security meeting for this purpose.
It should be noted that only in the last 72 hours almost 700 illegal immigrants have arrived in Spanish territory, according to the count carried out by Europa Press. The largest arrival has occurred in the Canary Islands, with a total of 409 people in six boats that have landed on different islands of the archipelago.
