Hartwig Fischer, a German art historian who was due to step down next year, said the museum did not sufficiently respond to warnings that an employee might have been stealing objects and that the ruling “must ultimately rest” with him.
“The situation in which the museum finds itself is extremely serious. I sincerely believe that it will overcome this episode and emerge stronger, but unfortunately I have come to the conclusion that my presence is a source of confusion,” Fischer said in a statement.
