Sumar lends two deputies to ERC, so that it can form its parliamentary group

Yolanda Díaz’s formation has made this decision counting on the fact that ERC “predictably” will be one of the “supports for the investiture” of Pedro Sánchez and therefore “for the coalition government”.

Sumar has decided to hand over two of its Catalan deputies to the Esquerra Republicana (ERC) to make it easier for this party to form its own parliamentary group in the Congress of Deputies.

The platform led by Yolanda Díaz, who obtained 31 seats in the last general elections, has acted in this way, counting on the fact that ERC “predictably will be one of the” supports for the investiture” of Pedro Sánchez and therefore “of the coalition government” .

The regulations of the Congress allow parties that meet the following requirements to form a group: have 15 seats or, with a minimum of five, exceed 5% of the votes in all of Spain or 15% in the constituencies in which they have busy. PP, PSOE, Vox and Sumar meet the first requirement; EH Bildu and PNV, the second.

Esquerra Republicana, like JXCat, has seven deputies, but does not reach 15% in two constituencies, nor in Catalonia as a whole. Sumar’s idea is to help them overcome that minimum by handing over their Catalan deputies before the deadline ends this Friday.

Specifically, the coalition will give up its deputy from Girona, Jùlia Boada, and that of Tarragona, Félix Alonso, so that they add their percentages of votes to those of the ERC in those provinces and thus exceed 15% where the Republicans do not arrive alone.

Once the group is formed, these two deputies would leave the ERC group to join Sumar’s, according to sources from the formation headed by Yolanda Díaz.

The Congress Table, which is autonomous to interpret the regulations, will be in charge of giving the go-ahead to this solution so that ERC has its own group. This practice has been admitted in some legislatures.

Getting your own group is important because it allows you to collect the subsidies given by Congress. In addition, the parliamentary groups have a fixed time to intervene in the debates, unlike the Mixed group in which its members have to divide the time.

For the moment, the parliamentary groups of PP, Vox, EH Bildu and PNV have been formed.
