The investiture debate of Alberto Núñez Feijóo will be held on September 26 and 27. The PSOE, on the contrary, had expressed its wish that the debate be held as soon as possible, and next week.

“I have made this decision after reaching an agreement with the candidate proposed by His Majesty the King,” Armengol explained in a brief appearance in Parliament. “I believe that with this date there is more than reasonable time for the candidate to carry out the appropriate negotiations with the representatives of the different political formations. Taking into account that the average time elapsed in the past legislatures was approximately one month, the call supposes that 35 days have elapsed since His Majesty the King proposed it until the debate”, Armengol explained, who communicated the decision to the spokespersons for the parties represented in Congress. Shortly before, in statements to SER, the PSOE spokesman in Congress, Patxi López, had insisted that Feijóo’s investiture should take place as soon as possible and had accused the PP of carrying out “an exercise of delay” and of practicing ” a strategy to see if they can repeat the elections”.

PSOE sources maintain that Armengol has finally decided to give Feijóo time so that he cannot later blame his failure on the fact that the investiture was hasty and he did not have time to negotiate.

The PP, with 137 seats, has 172 votes (by adding the 33 of Vox and those of the only deputies from UPN and the Canary Coalition). The PP leader also indicated that he would postpone the start of contacts with the parties until next Monday, once the parliamentary groups have been formally constituted.

Article 99 of the Constitution establishes that, “if after the period of two months, from the first investiture vote, no candidate has obtained the confidence of Congress, the King will dissolve both Chambers and call new elections with the endorsement of the President congressional”. The forecast that the parliamentary groups in Congress were considering was that the investiture debate would be held the last week of August so that a hypothetical electoral repetition would be on December 17, that is, before the Christmas holidays.
