The suicide of a young man who jumped onto the Santiago de Chile subway tracks on August 15 has shocked the entire country. Everything was captured on a station security camera. The images of the event went viral on social networks three days after the incident. In the recording you can see the gloomy moment in which the man looks to both sides to make sure he could not be stopped, then he takes a run and jumps to his death without anyone having time to react. So far no further details about the identity of the victim have been released. The Santiago de Chile Metro released a statement on Twitter where they reported that “the service was interrupted for a few hours, but it was finally resumed.”
How was the suicide?
The events occurred on line 1 of the Chilean metro around 1 in the afternoon. In the video shared on social networks you can see an individual in a blue jacket and jeans. On numerous occasions, the subject appears on the tracks in case the transport arrived. After a few moments, the man realizes that the train is about to pass and he takes a run to launch himself just as the vehicle is about to stop. Immediately afterwards the convoy rammed him and the man lost his life.
The witnesses who were waiting for the subway to arrive witnessed the entire scene and ran out before the tragic event that had just taken place at that station. In the video you can see how two women begin to hug each other while putting their hands to their heads because of what they had just seen.
Why do people take their lives on the subway?
The National Institute of Statistics (INE) reported in a document that, “in 2015 the number of suicides grew by 22% in Spain for the third consecutive year.” This year in Spain the number of suicides has risen to 4,000 cases. 75% were made by men. But committing a suicide act in the subway is not an entirely effective method, according to several psychologists, “suicide in the subway is one of the methods used in large cities, but it is not an infallible method. Suicides tend to program their action, although they then carry out an often impulsive act.
Impulsiveness is one of the main causes of why people take their lives in these places. This is why many metro stations began to implement quick help buttons in case someone is not feeling well. All in order to reduce the number of accidents that can happen in these places. Experts report that the best way to avoid these occurrences is to talk about it, “communication is very important in most cases.”
