Mac Pro M2 Ultra in the test: The expandable Only a few models Well-known exterior Many ports, old design Inside: CPU and graphics Faster flash, finally cards Which PCIe cards work everyday and accessories – plus conclusion
At the WWDC in early June, Apple finally presented the Mac Pro with Apple Silicon, along with the M2 Ultra processor and the revised Mac Studio. The latter has exactly the same maximum choices for processor, RAM and SSD as the Mac Pro – then why even need it? After all, it costs 3500 euros more with the same options. The answer lies in extensibility. We have already tested some of the compatible PCIe cards or hard disk modules.
Few models
Apple sells the Mac Pro as a base model for 8299 euros with an M2 Ultra chip that contains 24 CPU, 32 AI and 60 GPU cores. As a second model, there is only a variant with 76 GPU cores that is 1150 euros more expensive. That’s it for the tower versions. The same is repeated with the 700 euro more expensive, transverse rack housing. However, there is also a choice of RAM and SSDs. For 1840 euros extra you get 192 instead of 64 GB of RAM and for 2530 euros an 8 TB SSD instead of one with 1 TB. On the one hand, this is not a bargain and, on the other hand, some users still find it too little compared to the old Mac Pro with up to 1.5 TB of socketed RAM. Also, as said, you don’t get more graphics or CPU cores, RAM and SSD storage for the Mac Pro than for the Mac Studio with M2 Ultra.
At the front, three large fans constantly suck in air and blow it out again at the back. On the side sits a “Blower”.
We had a Mac Pro with an M2 Ultra 24/76, 128 GB of RAM and a 4 TB SSD for the price of 12,669 euros available for testing. In the last issue we tested a Mac Studio M2 Ultra 24/76 with 192 GB of RAM and an 8 TB SSD for 10,319 euros (see p. 26), which we use here for comparison.
