Many people probably have thousands of photos, videos and screenshots on their smartphones. Some of them are blurry, duplications and others maybe supposedly funny clips that you got in a messenger group and didn’t delete immediately. Either way, hardly anyone shines with a really organized photo app. Google wants to remedy the situation. The reminder function of the photos app gets AI support for this.

Memories are a kind of carousel in which automatically selected photos appear. Artificial intelligence is already responsible for compiling the images. In order to get to the AI albums, there will be a button next to the general media library in the future. Of course, you can also create reminders manually, select content and even block it if you don’t want certain photos to be displayed.
The app summarizes related images and videos under one title. You can change this, but AI can also help to find a new name – there is a “Help” button for that. However, this is still in an experimental phase in Google Labs, Google is asking for feedback as the hints and suggestions will not always be correct. The feedback is then there for learning. Basically, the new AI reminders will initially be made available in the USA, but then also worldwide.
Share photos, search photos
Memory albums can also be shared or a co-author specified. This works like shared albums before. You can invite friends and family to collaborate on the content. Shared memories can then also be saved as your own. In the blog post, Google announces that it will soon be possible to save the images captured in a memory album as a video that can be sent or even posted on social media platforms.
Most recently, Google added a new search function to its Photos app, which allows you to make queries in natural language that take multiple aspects into account. This works as usual, thanks to AI. So instead of just looking for content, such as a bridge, the search can then find, for example, “Charlie on the Golden Gate Bridge”. The feature is still in test mode, some people will be offered it in their browser when visiting Google Photos.
