It works conveniently and you quickly get the currently cheapest prices, but it also attracts dubious and criminal elements. c’t Safe shopping gives advice so that the whole thing remains safe and you don’t unintentionally become a data slingshot.

Successful online shopping begins with the source of the purchase. In the anonymity of the internet there are serious and less serious offers. Well-known shops rarely cause problems, but they don’t necessarily deliver the best offers – and dodgy dealers are already lurking on their marketplaces. Price search engines and bargain portals can help with the hunt, but you should be aware of their risks and side effects. This also applies in a slightly different way to brick-and-mortar retail if you (very cheap) want to digitize your customer cards. We show you how to proceed methodically and where you should suspect price, data or even fraud traps.
