If you want to read the WhatsApp messages of another person, it is currently easy with the web version of the messenger: It is easy to forget an open browser window and the door is open to readers on the screen, which is large compared to a smartphone. A screen lock should remedy this. Beta testers can already use them in WhatsApp Web.

The new screen lock is located in the Privacy menu. An individual password can be set there. The screen lock is then activated after one minute, after 15 minutes or after one hour. Also, there is an option to manually trigger them instantly. As with the lock screen of an operating system, an introductory page appears that must be passed by entering a password before the messages are displayed again.

Where the beta version is available
The feature longed for by some desktop users has a long history, reports blog WABetaInfo – WhatsApp is said to have tested it internally as early as 2022. Supposedly it is only available to individual beta testers so far. We were able to use them immediately after joining the beta program. If you want to use the beta, click on the three dots in the top right of the contact overview. Under “Settings” and “Help” there is a menu entry at the bottom where beta participation is possible by ticking.
If you forget your password, you can remove the link between the computer and smartphone and set it up again from the smartphone. Push notifications should also pause during the lock phase to protect user privacy.
