Microsoft’s Office package with Word, Excel and PowerPoint is the clear market leader on the verge of a monopoly; the associated file formats are considered industry standards. However, it is not entirely without alternatives. If you don’t want to be obtrusive about the cloud and have a pronounced need to communicate with Redmond, or if you work with Linux, for which Microsoft doesn’t offer its programs at all, you often use the open source package LibreOffice or its close relative OpenOffice.
However, there is another alternative that many do not even have on their screens: SoftMaker Office, consisting of the TextMaker word processor, the PlanMaker spreadsheet program and the PowerPoint counterpart Presentations. The package comes from a German manufacturer and is functionally on par with Microsoft Office and LibreOffice. In some respects it even has the edge.
There are both one-time purchase and subscription versions for Windows, macOS (also native for M1 and M2) and Linux. The subscription also includes amazingly feature-rich mobile versions for Android and iOS. Compared to Microsoft Office, just like LibreOffice, the only thing missing is a counterpart to Outlook. In earlier versions, SoftMaker initially included Mozilla Thunderbird and later the eM Client in the bundle, but has since dispensed with the addition of an email program.
