For the first time, Apple will also have a new iPhone generation produced in India before the official presentation, which will probably take place on September 12th. According to a Bloomberg report, the company is thus focusing on diversifying its production instead of relying on China as the country of manufacture, as has always been the case – at least before the start of sales. The iPhone 15 is also being made in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, where the Foxconn Technology Group from Taiwan operates a large factory in Sriperumbudur.

Finally delivery parity
Before 2022, Apple only had partial quantities of the iPhone final production carried out outside of China, and India also had to wait at least six months after the start of sales. With the iPhone 14, it was much faster with the devices “Made in India”. In 2023, parity between China and India should prevail for the first time, at least as far as delivery is concerned, writes Bloomberg. However, it is still unclear whether the goal will be achieved. In the spring of 2023, seven percent of iPhone production is said to have come from the subcontinent.
However, India also has disadvantages as a production location. The country has significantly less experience with the assembly of high-end electronics than China. The country also lacks a rich supply chain. In practice, this means that large quantities of components must first be imported before they are then screwed together in India. In addition to Foxconn, two other Taiwanese manufacturers are also said to build the iPhone 15 – Pegatron and Wistron.
Indian billion dollar production
Apple’s involvement in India is already ensuring that the subcontinent is becoming an exporter worth billions of dollars in production. In the fiscal year up to the end of March, iPhones worth seven billion US dollars are said to have made their way from India to the world. At the same time, Apple is trying to boost domestic sales as well. To this end, the company recently opened its own shops in major cities.
Apple boss Tim Cook plans to proceed in India in a similar way to China and to create production and sales markets. India has an estimated 1.4 billion inhabitants and a rapidly growing middle class. So far, however, Android devices are still ahead. The iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max will probably initially only be made in China.
