In Magaluf (Mallorca) six young people were arrested on Tuesday as alleged perpetrators of a sexual assault on an 18-year-old British woman who was on vacation on the island. It happened during the early hours of Monday in a hotel in the Mallorcan town of that town and they recorded the victim while they committed the rape, as reported by the Civil Guard this Wednesday. The detainees, of French and Swiss origin, testified this Tuesday afternoon in the courts of Guardia de Palma and have already been sent to provisional prison.
The day before, in Ceutí, a Murcian town of 12,400 inhabitants that was at parties, another was committed against a 15-year-old minor. The Murcia Civil Guard is still investigating the events that occurred on the night of Saturday to Sunday and for which a complaint was filed shortly after at the Las Torres de Cotillas barracks, about nine kilometers from Ceutí. “The investigation is still open and there is no one arrested yet,” they report from the Armed Institute, from which, in addition, they explain that at the moment they cannot “affirm or deny” that the aggression was multiple. “The complaint is for sexual assault, without more. Now we are proceeding with the medical examinations and testimonies and the rest of the evidence” to find out what happened. They are not aware, also for the moment, that they recorded or took photos of the aggression.
They are not the first this year and are similar to known group rapes. The last one, also in the Balearic Islands, was very similar to the one that took place this past Sunday in Magaluf. In the early hours of Thursday, July 13, agents of the National Police arrested six German tourists between the ages of 21 and 23 as alleged perpetrators of a group sexual assault committed in a hotel against a woman, also German, in her 20s; Like the young British woman, she was on vacation in the Playa de Palma area, in the Balearic capital, with a group of friends. They also recorded the rape and five of them were sent to provisional prison.
Before that, the investigation of the Family and Women’s Care Unit (UFAM) of the National Police, in Madrid, for a sexual assault on a 21-year-old girl who, after voluntarily consuming a substance offered to her by the three alleged attackers and who left her asleep, was raped by those men in an apartment located in the Madrid district of Tetuán. It was Saturday May 6th. And the previous acquaintance was perpetrated on Sunday, April 9, when seven minors gang-raped two girls aged 12 and 13 in Logroño, on the ground floor of a building on Avenida de Navarra, near the old town of the capital of La Rioja. . Five of them were arrested; the judge ordered two of them to be confined under a closed regime, and issued a restraining order and prohibition to communicate with the victims for the other three; the others had not yet reached 14 years of age, for which reason they are inimputable —they cannot be held responsible for the criminal age—, and they were left under the guardianship of their families.
The number of multiple assaults of which the Ministry of the Interior is aware have only grown for years. The latest report on crimes against freedom and sexual indemnity, with numbers from 2016 to 2021, reflects this rise: multiple crimes have gone from 371 that year to 573 two years ago, with a decrease only in 2020, due to confinements due to the pandemic. In that time frame (2016-2021), 2,691 were accumulated (1,829 committed by two aggressors and 862 by three or more). However, the age of these data is unknown, so far there are no statistics that break down the age of the aggressors for multiple assaults.
Yes, those of the victims are known. And for several years a stable upward trend has been maintained: sexual violence is growing the most among minors and they are the ones that each time represent a greater percentage of these victims. Minors account for half of all known victimizations: in 2021 there were 3,805 victims of sexual crimes between the ages of zero and 13, and 4,512 between the ages of 14 and 17.
Last spring, in a few weeks, several group rapes of minors and committed by minors triggered the alarm: boys and adolescents who attacked and who were 17, 14, some even 13 or 12, not even criminally responsible, and girls and adolescents who were assaulted when they were 15, 14, 12 or 11. And that, experts and institutions clarify, are the known facts, because in sexist violence, in any of its forms, there is a hidden bag that is impossible to quantify exactly. In Spain, the largest study to date on sexual violence (in all its degrees) calculated two years ago that only 2% of all sexual attacks committed annually are detected, some 400,000, according to their analysis.
