Alberto Núñez Feijóo will claim his right to be the candidate for the Presidency of the Government, at least for the moment. This has been confirmed by the leader of the PP during his intervention before the deputies and senators of the Popular Party, in a meeting held in Congress on the afternoon of this Wednesday, a few hours before the constitution session of the Cortes. “We want to form a majority to get the legislature going,” Feijóo said during his address, in which from minute one he has thrown darts against Pedro Sánchez. In the midst of an “atypical August” and almost a month after the citizens went to the polls “despite the difficulties”, Feijóo has asked the acting president to “know how to lose” in favor of the PP, which won the general elections of 23-J but with an insufficient majority to be able to govern. A result with which he, for now, does not add the necessary support for an eventual investiture or to achieve a majority of the Board of the Lower House, whose composition is voted on this Thursday. The president of the PP has proposed the general secretary and until today spokesperson in Congress, Cuca Gamarra, as a candidate to preside over the Congress; and the Deputy Secretary for Local Policy, Pedro Rollán, for the Senate, a position that he is guaranteed by holding an absolute majority in the Upper House. Feijóo has asserted that repeating elections would be “bad news” for Spain, but that a “destructive government” by Sánchez and his allies would be “worse news”.
The intention of the Popular Party, since election night and according to his public statements, was for Feijóo to attend the round of contacts with the King as a candidate to preside over La Moncloa. But, after trying various strategies without results, the leader of the PP has guaranteed only the votes of his 137 deputies, the 33 seats of Vox and that of UPN, so he could not be sworn in either in the first or second round. However, for days, PP leaders had been “convinced” that Feijóo would propose Feijóo as a candidate and had transferred their “availability” to Feijóo receiving such a commission. On these claims, Sánchez had accused, hours before and also from Congress, the Popular Party of “pressure the head of state.” A few words that have been answered by Feijóo before his own. “I have no doubt that the head of state will act as he has always done: in accordance with the law and according to constitutional powers; he has the pressure and the problems (in reference to Sánchez)”.
In the current scenario, and since the vote in favor of the Canary Coalition deputy is not guaranteed “one hundred percent” -according to sources from the PP leadership-, it is not so clear now that Feijóo persists in his aspirations to be the candidate for the presidency despite being the list with the most votes, as he has been claiming in recent weeks and as he has done again today. Sources from Feijóo’s cabinet assure that the leader would have to reconsider whether or not to run if Sánchez achieved the vote in favor of Junts. “If things change, we will analyze it,” they say in the Feijóo environment.
As long as this hypothesis is not fulfilled, the leader of the PP will defend his legitimacy to the point of exhaustion to be the future president of the Government as the winner of the elections and in the face of the “defeat” suffered by Sánchez at the polls. “It is logical, reasonable and proportional to start the legislature as the winner; we have won, although some of our rivals do not want to acknowledge it or congratulate us. Spain does not deserve a president who wants to be so again after losing the elections… It deserves a government with a very large constitutional majority… that the will is respected at the polls on July 23, even on May 28”, Feijóo has maintained, who has charged against the acting president. “Sánchez will go down in history as the leader of the political blockade in our country,” continued the head of the PP, who finished his speech by committing himself to the “moral” and “economic” reconstruction of Catalonia.

Feijóo has defended Gamarra’s candidacy as a candidate to preside over Congress both for his “training” and for his “experience”, and for his “proven solvency at the polls”, in a veiled reference to the socialist candidate Francina Armengol, since the Former Balearic president lost the regional elections on May 28. The deputies Marta González, José Antonio Bermúdez de Castro, Guillermo Mariscal and Carmen Navarro will in turn aspire to the position of vice-presidents and secretaries of the Table of Congress, and Javier Maroto, Eva Ortiz and Marimar Blanco are running for the Senate together with Pedro Rollan.
Just a few hours before the meeting with the PP parliamentarians, Feijóo has collected the credential that endorses him as an elected deputy. Management sources confirm that he has delivered the declaration of assets and income in Congress, after not having updated said declaration in the Senate, two weeks after leaving office, to reflect how much he earns by virtue of his position as president of the pp. However, it will not be possible to know this amount for at least a month, according to parliamentary sources, the time it usually takes for it to be published on the website of the Lower House, since the documents have to follow a series of prior procedures.
