The state of Bremen sold a lot of iPad cases in one fell swoop on Wednesday. The auction, which took place on the customs side, caused a stir, as it is quite unusual that 10,000 protective covers are for sale, especially since these are not intended for very old devices, but for iPads from the 7th to 9th generation are. The 9th generation iPads didn’t go on sale until 2021.

In the end, the 10,000 cases that had to be picked up went for 716.69 euros. The starting bid was 500 euros. There were twelve commandments in all. What the buyer intends to do with so many cases is unclear. Depending on the condition, the purchase was definitely a bargain: the new Shockguard Slim case is available in stores from 23 euros.
Cases in use due to delivery bottlenecks
When asked, the spokesman for the Senator for Children and Education, Aygün Kilincsoy, was able to explain how the auction came about: “These are our old interim cases, which we only had temporarily as protection until we got the sensible, more secure keyboard cases. Unfortunately, there were significant delivery bottlenecks during the pandemic and we didn’t want to give the iPads to schoolchildren without any cases.”
In the first year of the corona pandemic, 2020, Bremen had equipped all pupils and teachers with iPads by the end of the year – a total of almost 100,000 devices. This made the Hanseatic city the first federal state to equip all schoolchildren with digital devices. Since distance learning was popular in 2020, the devices should be distributed and used as quickly as possible. That’s why the country decided not to wait for the delivery of the keyboard cases.
