c’t’s bi-weekly processor podcast is available…
Germany and above all “Silicon Saxony” are developing into a European chip beacon: The world’s largest semiconductor contract manufacturer TSMC from Taiwan wants to build in Dresden from 2024. Investments of 10 billion euros are planned together with the European chip companies Infineon, Bosch and NXP. The new company is called the “European Semiconductor Manufacturing Company”, or ESMC for short. Starting in 2027, it will produce chips with structure widths of 28, 22, 16 and 12 nanometers, especially for use in cars.
Although the first 28-nanometer chips came onto the market in 2012, the technology that has been developed since then is not outdated. Some new 28-nanometer chips from Infineon are just coming to market. Mark Mantel from heise online and Christof Windeck from c’t discuss what ESMC should produce in the 2023/17 episode of “Bit noise: The processor podcast from c’t”.
