The PSOE will propose the former president of the Balearic Islands Francina Armengol to preside over the Congress of Deputies in the constitutive session of the Lower House that will take place this Thursday. As reported by the PSOE, the Federal Executive Commission of the PSOE will make this proposal to the socialist parliamentary group this Thursday. Both bodies will meet tomorrow Wednesday. On August 9, she ruled herself out as president of the Congress Table, the governing body and collegiate representation of the Chamber, which will be elected on August 17, in the constituent session of the Cortes.
As OKDIARIO announced, Armengol was ERC’s favorite to preside over Congress and Sánchez had to insist on accepting the proposal. His profile, close to separatism, -as was amply demonstrated during his autonomous mandate-, is a gesture from Sánchez to ERC in order to negotiate the investiture, the main objective. Armengol’s candidacy, the most sanchista of the socialist barons, was one of the most publicized in recent days, and the possibility that she was the PSOE candidate had been well received by the socialist members.
The separatists rejected Miquel Iceta, located in the first pools, as the candidate. Batet was not to her liking either, although she herself had discarded herself weeks ago. This week, Armengol herself insisted to the press that she did not plan to occupy that position, but Sánchez insisted, convinced that the negotiation with the independence movement will be costly and that any gesture is necessary to pave it.
Precisely, Sánchez will meet this Wednesday with the socialist parliamentary group to outline the strategy for the election of the Congressional Bureau when negotiations with other left-wing parties are speeding up to form a progressive majority in this important body of the Chamber. And all this, pending the position of Junts, vital to obtain that majority, which will only be revealed a few minutes before Congress is set up next Thursday.
The extreme left is also delighted with Armengol. The deputy of Sumar and first secretary of the Congress Table in the last legislature, Gerardo Pisarello, has considered that Armengol will be “a good candidate” to preside over Congress. In his opinion, he “has a multinational sensitivity that other branches of the party do not have” and he has stressed that the idea of having a “progressive and multinational” Table chaired by someone who has that sensitivity is “fundamental.”

Armengol, who has been a member of the Balearic Islands Socialist Party since the 1990s, has “extensive experience and service in public and parliamentary life”. The PSOE emphasizes that it has developed its work in the main administrations: councilor in the Inca town hall in its beginnings, later deputy in the Parliament of the Balearic Islands, Minister of the Mallorca Island Council, deputy in the Congress of Deputies to, finally, become the first woman president of the Autonomous Community in 2015, a position that she revalidated in 2019.
“Francina Armengol is a politician close to the daily reality of citizens, she represents the fight for women’s equality, social justice and the commitment to coexistence based on dialogue,” she stresses. For the PSOE, Armengol is also “an example of a country that coexists naturally in the wealth of the various languages spoken in Spain”, as well as a leader “committed” to the ecological transition. “We are convinced that she will represent our country, as the third authority of the State, with the maximum solvency, just as her predecessor did in the position Meritxell Batet”.
