The PSOE is going to propose this Thursday Francina Armengol (Inca, 51 years old) for the Presidency of the Congress of Deputies, a position that will be voted on after the constitution of the Cortes on the same day and that is key to the fate of the legislature. The former president of the Balearic Islands, ousted by the PP and Vox coalition on the islands after the autonomous elections in May, has already received public support from Sumar, a partner in a potential new government of Pedro Sánchez. The appointment is also a nod to the Catalan independence movement at a key moment. The Socialists are convinced of the good reception of Armengol in the Catalan independence parties before defining who is going to control the Table of the Lower House and, above all, to reach an investiture. It will be that of Sánchez or that of Alberto Núñez Feijóo, or an electoral repetition will be inevitable in the event that neither of them achieves the votes that will elevate them to La Moncloa. The PSOE has made the announcement public with a note that ends up breaking down Armengol’s virtues and seems to take his choice for granted: “We are convinced that he will represent our country, as the third authority of the State, with the maximum solvency, just as his predecessor in the position Meritxell Batet”.
Armengol is the one chosen by the formation to occupy the position left by Meritxell Batet, who expressly waived the possibility of repeating in the position. The Federal Executive Commission of the party, which will meet this Wednesday morning, will make this proposal to the Socialist Parliamentary Group in Congress. The name of Armengol had sounded strongly in recent days as a candidate for this position, precisely because of some of the aspects that the PSOE explains in its note: “Living naturally in the wealth of the various languages spoken in Spain.” The normalized use of the co-official languages in the Cortes, especially Catalan, is one of the present and historical demands of nationalism, especially Basque and Catalan.
Very excited and grateful for the trust of my party @psoe and our general secretary @sanchezcastejon. Citizens are waiting for us to undertake a legislature of dialogue, work and consensus. We are in politics to solve people’s problems,… https://t.co/iVJg4TacZP

Armengol has been a member of the PSOE since the 1990s and, the socialists emphasize, he has treasured political baggage in these years: he was a councilor in the Inca City Council in its beginnings; she was later elected deputy in the Balearic parliament; she held the position of counselor at the Mallorca Island Council; She has previously been a deputy in the Congress of Deputies and, before this legislature, to finally become president of the Balearic Islands in 2015, a position that she revalidated in 2019 and which she lost in the last regional and municipal elections on May 28.
The candidate herself has published a tweet on her personal X account (formerly Twitter) in which she is excited and grateful for the trust placed in her, and in which she is determined to “undertake a legislature of dialogue, work and consensus . We are in politics to solve people’s problems, to transform society and to move towards a better future”.
The Balearic socialist received the support of Sumar this morning, even before the PSOE made the candidacy official. The general secretary of the Communist Party (PCE), leader of the United Left and elected deputy in Congress for Sumar, Enrique Santiago, when asked this morning about it, replied: “Mrs. Armengol from the point of view of the progressive forces , left and democratic is a good candidate for anything. She is a leader with whom the left can work very well. He has directed two plural governments in the Balearic Islands with Podemos, IU, he has always known how to give plural work dynamics, where everyone has felt represented without interference, respecting government agreements, he has defended more self-government for the Balearic Islands, their own language and in matters of memory democracy has been a very committed woman”. In this sense, the deputy-elect of Sumar-En Comú Podem Gerardo Pisarello has considered this Tuesday that Armengol would be a good candidate for the position, because she “has a multinational sensitivity that other branches of this party possibly do not have. She is a woman ”, he said in statements to the Catalunya Informació radio station.

To be elected, Armengol must have more votes than the candidate proposed by Alberto Núñez Feijóo’s PP, for which he must have the favorable vote of Sumar, BNG, PNV, ERC, EH Bildu and at least two Junts deputies. She alone could avoid the support of Carles Puigdemont’s party in the event that she also obtained the support of the Canarian Coalition deputy and that the PP only achieved the votes of Vox and UPN.
