The mayor of Seville, José Luis Sanz (PP), has warned this Tuesday that the Seville capital is suffering a “wave of robberies” in the historic center and has called on the Government of Sánchez and the ministry Fernando Grande-Marlaska for “collaboration” of the National Police to deal with this situation. The popular has denounced that the city faces an increase in crimes with a deficit of 500 national agents.
In statements to the media, Sanz has alluded to the latest data on the evolution of crime in Seville. And it is that the latest statistical balance of the Ministry of the Interior reflects that the city closed the first quarter of the year with an increase of 18.4% in the total number of criminal offenses compared to the same period in 2022. The alarming include a rise of 15 .9% in robberies in homes and establishments, a 20.9% rise in thefts and 24.2% more offenses for drug trafficking, in addition to a 16.2% drop in crimes of injuries and tumultuous fight, among other aspects.
The popular mayor has highlighted that the city is suffering a “wave of robberies” in the center of Seville, pointing out in this regard that the Local Police recently arrested a 30-year-old man of North African origin as the alleged perpetrator of several attempted robberies with violence in the old town.
That is why Sanz has asked the Government Delegation in Andalusia for the “collaboration” of the National Police, since the Local Police, as he has stressed, is already “doing everything it can”, with “special” devices and “promoting » Night services and their rapid intervention unit.
The document of the “2023 budget template” of the Seville City Council, dated November 2022, reflected that the Local Police force – made up of 1,275 positions – then dragged 209 “available” vacancies and 27 “unavailable”. In this context, Sanz has stated that at the moment “almost 500” agents of the Local Police are missing in Seville and approximately the same number of members of the National Police.
In parallel, the mayor recalled that on June 27 the City Council approved the bases to summon 70 Local Police positions in order to cover the same number of vacancies thanks to the public job offers of 2022 and 2023, which will have to translate into the future selection process.
To this end, the mayor has promised “more Local Police positions” throughout the mandate and an upcoming municipal budget project with “items to increase video surveillance areas.”
