A total of almost 11,992 people now work for development studios and publishers, according to the industry association game in July. That is an increase of 7 percent compared to 2022. Within the past year, the number of game companies also grew by 15.5 percent to a total of 908. 411 of them act as developers and publishers of video games, 450 are exclusively involved in the development of games . The remaining 47 publishers work exclusively in the marketing of games. Since 2020, the number of gaming companies in Germany has increased by 46.

The German games market also grew economically in the first half of 2023: According to the industry association, sales of games and games hardware totaled around 4.7 billion euros. This corresponds to an increase of 4 percent compared to the same period last year. Games themselves were responsible for 2.7 billion euros, games hardware for 1.6 billion euros. The remaining 413 million euros are accounted for by online services.
“After the German games market was able to stabilize at a high level in 2022, it picked up speed again in the first half of 2023,” said Felix Falk from the game industry association. “An increase of 4 percent is a remarkable development in view of the economic uncertainties in recent months. Above all, the many high-class blockbuster titles in the first half of the year contributed to this result. Added to this was the continued strong demand for game consoles, which are now finally getting better can be satisfied.”
The association also attributes the growth in the German industry to the federal games funding that started in 2020. The industry association sees the fact that further applications for funding are now being suspended as a danger for the future: “We are in a race to catch up with other locations in the world, which the government is now threatening to choke off again,” said Falk. “This is not how Germany manages to attract companies and create more jobs.”
