Xiaomi continues its efforts to create the Cyberdog 2, a robot best friend for man that could replace traditional pets. The robot is modeled after a dog, more precisely: a Doberman, as Xiaomi announced on Monday. The successor to the first Cyberdog, which was presented in 2021, should now be much more intelligent, Xiaomi promises.

The second generation of the Cyberdog looks much more pleasing than Xiaomi’s original four-legged robot. The head now sits on a neck, the body has become slimmer and the shape of the joints promise better mobility. A total of twelve motors move his four limbs. In addition, the Cyberdog 2 has become lighter. The robot dog has lost a considerable 40 percent. He now weighs 8.9 kg.

The Cyberdog 2 is controlled by an Nvidia Carmel ARM processor with six cores and a Volta GPU with 48 Tesor cores (Nvidia Jetson Xavier NX platform). The computer is supported by 8 GB of working memory and a 16 GB eMMC 5.1 flash memory. The memory can be expanded using an SD memory card.
Open-Source-Software
The Cyberdog 2 software is partially open source. This gives developers the opportunity to teach the robot further tricks. The robot dog already masters some of them when it comes out of the packaging. He can “heel”, recognize and avoid obstacles, perform back flips and ride a skateboard. If he falls and lands on his back, he can get up on his own. The tricks can be called up by voice command. Four microphones accept the voice commands. Alternatively, the robot dog can be controlled via a smartphone via Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi 5.
The robotic dog perceives its surroundings via lidar, infrared sensors and a 13-megapixel camera, which helps to identify individual objects. On board are a 1-megapixel RGB camera, a 146-degree fisheye camera and an Intel RealSense D430 depth camera, which is also used for environment recognition.

An integrated 97.2 Wh battery should keep the Cyberdog 2 alive for around 90 minutes before it has to be charged again.
The Xiaomi Cyberdog 2 is still classified as a developer platform by Xiaomi and is sold as such exclusively in China. The Cyberdog 2 costs 12,999 yuan, around 1638 euros. It is unclear if and when it will be launched in other countries.
