On Wednesday, the first new film from the universe of the science fiction cult series Babylon 5 was released in more than 20 years, “Babylon 5: The Road Home” can also be purchased from online video services in Germany. Series creator J. Michael Straczynski asked fans on X (formerly Twitter) to let Warner Bros. Entertainment know if they liked the film. Because apart from sales figures – “which I hear are great” – enthusiasm also counts for a lot. Should the studio show interest, he could envision “comfortably” making two such films a year, but that’s only speculative. So far, no one has approached him about this.

Continuation after a 15 year break
Straczynski had mysteriously announced the animated film last fall as a secret and completely finished project. “As if no time had passed at all,” he had promised fans of the cult series. In early May, he then revealed that it was the “wild, heartfelt and fast-paced” animated film that was produced as a “love letter to the fans”. The strip can be purchased on various VoD platforms for 15 euros. Only MagentaTV promises German sound, otherwise it is available in English with German subtitles. The Blu-ray version is only available in North America.
Babylon 5 was filmed between 1993 and 1998 and is one of the most important and popular science fiction series ever. Especially with the narrative of a continuous story and episodes that build on one another, the series set itself apart from the competition at the time. Several TV movies and the TV series “Crusade” followed, which took place in the fictional universe. After the DVD “Babylon 5: The Lost Tales” (“Forgotten Legends: Voices from the Darkness”) from the summer of 2007, things went quiet about the series, also because the responsible production company Warner Bros put up resolute resistance to further projects. Straczynski is currently working on a new edition for the US television station The CW.
