The US online mail order company Amazon wants to ship significantly more goods without additional packaging in the future. According to US media, 11 percent of orders in the USA are already delivered in this way. Customers are free to choose. The initiative has met with mixed reactions in the US. The option of doing without outer packaging is already being offered in Germany for various products.
On social networks, some are happy to have to dispose of fewer boxes. According to the statements, especially those who order a lot often find the additional outer packaging annoying. Amazon makes a similar argument in a press release: A survey of 2,000 adults in Germany in June 2023 showed that 57 percent of those surveyed would like to receive items ordered online without extra packaging.
Not everyone likes the waiver
However, there are also caveats. And they are mainly linked to the concern that shipping without outer packaging could become the standard in the future. Commentators on the Internet criticize that orders are more exposed to the weather due to the lack of outer packaging, and the boxes of goods often provide information about the contents, which makes it easier for thieves to find lucrative items for them. The fact that Amazon’s own delivery service, according to user reports, likes to drop shipments outside the door when nobody is there also plays a role here. In addition, it is also a question of privacy if, for example, orders contain erotic toys or other items that allow conclusions to be drawn about private matters.
At least for the moment, worries that Amazon will generally dispense with outer packaging are unfounded, according to the report in the Wall Street Journal. Buyers should continue to have free choice and, according to Amazon, could thus make a contribution to sustainability. Nevertheless, Amazon will probably have the greatest advantages if the model catches on: In addition to the lower costs for the purchase of outer packaging, savings can often also be made in storage and transport due to the smaller size of the shipments and weight reductions.
Amazon is testing product boxes
The US mail order company advises its suppliers on how to design the packaging for their goods from the outset so that they can be shipped without outer packaging. The group also works with artificial intelligence and tests product packaging near its headquarters in Seattle. Among other things, vibrations and falling from different angles and heights are simulated.
