A 61-year-old former firefighter from the Balearic Institute of Nature (Ibanat) was arrested last Monday by the Civil Guard for causing seven fires in the Mallorcan towns of Selva and Caimari in the last month.
The individual, currently on sick leave, was recorded on Monday by a Benemérita drone fleeing on a motorcycle and completely drunk after causing another fire in the municipality of Caimari, in an area very close to some homes, for which the Local Police de Selva was forced to evict several neighbors. Subsequently, a police device quickly arrested the culprit.
The arsonist was completely unaware that he had been under surveillance for more than two weeks by several investigators for being suspected of causing several agricultural and forest fires in his area. The neighbors knew that they were being provoked, so they decided to notify the emergency teams.
As explained by UH, the Civil Guard has discovered, thanks to the statements of the arsonist, that the detainee was the person who used to alert the firefighting teams to the fires. In addition, at the time of his arrest, the individual was under the influence of alcohol and had several lighters, fire starters, papers, and accelerants with him. The defendant was a member of the Ibanat as a firefighter for a time, but was finally separated from the group. He currently worked in the masonry and collaborated with the City Council for the town’s races.
