Finally, to avoid legal problems with the candidacies, the center-right political movement Construye appointed journalist Christian Zurita, a friend of Villavicencio’s Construye Movement, to replace him on the ballot. With great security measures, Zurita together with the vice-presidential candidate Andrea González evoked the possibility that his candidacy would be rejected

The current favorite in the polls is the left-wing candidate Luisa González, of the Citizen Revolution Movement, of former President Rafael Correa, currently in exile in Belgium.

The murder of Villavicencio has put the increase in violence in the country in the last three years as a priority issue in the elections next Sunday.
