South Africa’s main opposition party called the move a “real joke” as it raised questions about whether the 81-year-old former president is receiving preferential treatment to avoid serving a 15-month sentence for contempt of court by refusing to testify in a corruption investigation.
The referral program was authorized by President Cyril Ramaphosa and was made public for the first time on Friday. Although justice officials said their goal is to release more than 9,400 inmates from jail and place them under home correctional supervision, Zuma seemed to be the first to benefit from it.
