Apple’s product names are – at least initially – often pulled through the cocoa. That was the case around 13 years ago with the iPad tablet or with the Dynamic Island function in the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max. There should also be jokes like this with the Vision Pro, Apple’s first mixed reality headset – at least, if a beta leak is correct that lists a new designation for the battery to be connected by cable.

tvOS 17 with the next leak
According to the developer and leak expert @aaronp613, Apple has made a “Magic Battery” out of the accessory previously known as the “MagSafe Battery Pack”. This reference stands in the fifth developer pre-release of tvOS 17, which was distributed this week and has already spawned other code leaks. “It looks like the Vision Pro battery has a new name.”
It remains unclear why Apple introduced the new term and whether it actually ends up in the product – after all, such betas are still a field for experimentation among developers, despite being publicly available. In addition, “Magic Battery” would also be quite over-the-top: the battery pack, which is made of a matt aluminum alloy, is not really magical. So it is connected to a braided cable, which in turn hangs on the Vision Pro via a special connector.
Two hours or on a leash
The user has to carry the “Magic Battery” in his jacket or trouser pocket or attach it to his belt using attachment accessories that are not yet available. The runtime isn’t magical either: “The external battery enables an operating time of up to 2 hours,” writes Apple succinctly. After all, the battery has a USB-C connection, to which you can attach a power supply unit with another cable. This makes “all-day use” possible, even if on a leash.
The new battery term also took care of that expected for exhilaration. As the past has taught us, however, Apple often manages to cover up such jokes – also with marketing power: Nobody laughed at the iPad for a long time and even with the Dynamic Island there are only rarely grimacing faces. The Vision Pro will be released in spring 2024 and should cost at least $3500.
