“In what language is the inscription found on the bronze sheet known as the Hand of Irulegi written? Asked the presenter of the renowned British quiz on general culture, and almost instantly one of the contestants responded, hitting the nail on the head: ” Basque”.
The echo of the Hand of Irulegi has reached the well-known television contest “University Challenge” on the British channel BBC Two. It is a competition between students from different universities in the United Kingdom that raises questions about general culture both nationally and internationally.
In one of the programs recently broadcast, the presenter Amol Rajan asked the following question: “In what language is the inscription found on the bronze sheet known as the Hand of Irulegi, dated to the late Bronze Age and which was discovered in 2021 near Pamplona?”. Without thinking twice, one of the participants from the Oxford University team replied “basque” to which the presenter nodded affirming “It’s basque”.
The Twitter user ‘Badulaket’ has shared the video that includes that moment, and it did not take long for it to go viral:
“University Challenge” is a successful program that every week pits two teams of four students each from the most prestigious universities in the United Kingdom against each other.
