The Climate Change and Energy Transition Law has made one of its first decisions regarding the so-called Low Emission Zones (ZBE), in municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants. The objective is none other than to reduce pollution in the environment and article 14.3 of this law, which entered into force on January 1, 2023, will have an impact above all on a series of cars that will see their mobility on the road and in city. The older the worse, but you also have to pay attention to the badge and the fuel your vehicle runs on.
“Municipalities with more than 50,000 inhabitants and island territories will adopt sustainable urban mobility plans before 2023 that introduce mitigation measures that make it possible to reduce emissions derived from mobility,” indicates the explanatory document for this measure, controversial especially for those users who have cars that will not be able to count on the same conditions as others that are suitable for free movement.
In Madrid, the low emission zones have been in operation for a long time and there it will not be possible to circulate with cars without a label that do not have their registration in the area inside the M-30. From January 1, 2025, in less than a year and a half, the measure will be more restrictive if possible and that is that by then no car without an environmental badge will be freed from the ban, without distinguishing between registered and non-registered in the center.
All car labels
Currently, cars in Spain can have four different environmental labels or badges. The first is the ZERO label, which includes battery electric cars, but also extended-range electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles with a minimum range of 40 kilometers. Fuel cell vehicles would also fall into this group.
The second environmental distinction label is the ECO, to which plug-in electric vehicles with a range of less than 40 kilometers are entitled. The C label is for gasoline cars and light vans, with registration after January 1, 2006, as well as for diesel cars from September 2015. The last label, with which you can also drive in restricted areas, it is label B and includes light gasoline vans and passenger cars that have been registered between January 1, 2001 and January 1, 2006, in gasoline vehicles, and from 2006 to 2015 , in the case of diesel cars.
