What is the most secure password? Not at all, because in the best case you can use an authentication method that is structurally much more secure. The technology for this has been around for ages with the quasi-standard FIDO2. Many are already using such techniques without knowing it. Because you don’t necessarily have to buy a security chip for this – a smartphone that is set up with unlocking by fingerprint or Face ID can also serve as an authentication device.

The weekly c’t podcast c’t uplink is available …
In the podcast, we talk about the practical application: How do you set up Passkey logins, how secure can the whole thing actually be – and can’t you quickly shoot yourself in the knee if you tie all your logins to hardware that can be lost or broken ?
Also present: Ronald Eikenberg, Kathrin Stoll, Jan Schüßler
There is also more on the subject in c’t issue 18/2023. There we not only describe the status of support in various browsers and operating systems, but also give tips for website operators on upgrading to Passkey capability. Also: an interview with Andrew Shikiar, head of the FIDO Alliance, whom we peppered with all sorts of questions.
