After DJI just presented a new drone with two 1/1.3-inch sensors with the “Air 3”, the company is now releasing its “Osmo Action 4” action cam. It is based on the same CMOS sensor, which is larger than that of the previous Osmo Action 3, which had to make do with 1/1.7 inches. This is reflected in the price: The Osmo Action 4 now costs from 429 euros and is therefore around 70 euros more expensive than the Osmo Action 3 at the start of sales.
The larger sensor promises improved light sensitivity and thus higher image quality. However, DJI also reduced the maximum resolution for vertical 4:3 recordings from 4096 x 3072 pixels to 3840 x 2880 pixels. Even photos (in JPEG or raw format) now only have a resolution of 3648 x 2736 pixels instead of 4000 x 3000 pixels.
Videos in 4K120
The Osmo Action 4 offers a viewing angle of 155 degrees and shoots videos in 4K (3840 x 2160 pixels) at a maximum of 120 frames per second with a fixed aperture of f/2.8 when recording. The recordings have a maximum bit rate of 130 MBit/s and are stored in MP4 format (H.264 codec). It supports the 10-bit “D-Log-M” color mode, which according to DJI allows more highlights and shadow details, making the recordings easier to edit in post-production.

According to DJI, other innovations include an improved “InvisiStick” mode, which recognizes a selfie stick and digitally disappears. Furthermore, the Osmo Action 4 now allows dives of up to 18 meters, two meters more than its predecessor. Also included are the practical magnetic holders for quickly changing accessories. When it comes to sound, the Osmo Action 4 uses an array of three microphones that are designed to efficiently reduce wind noise, even with fast movements.
The 1,770mAh battery should have a runtime of up to 150 minutes and work at temperatures of up to – 20° degrees. According to DJI, a quick charge function enables charging from 0 to 80 percent in 18 minutes.
