On August 9, 1945, an atomic bomb was dropped on the Japanese city by the US army, exploding at an altitude of 470 meters, destroying 40% of the city.
Nagasaki recalled the tragedy on Wednesday at a ceremony, more modest than usual due to a typhoon turned into a tropical storm.
At 11:02, the exact time the bomb exploded, there was a minute of silence.
Japan’s Prime Minister Fumio Kishida was unable to travel to the city due to the storm, but stressed in a video message the growing difficulty of achieving a world free of nuclear weapons.
For his part, UN Secretary General António Guterres said the body’s top priority is to achieve a world without these “inhumane weapons” to prevent a devastation similar to Nagasaki from occurring.
