After entering the mobile games business, the streaming service Netflix is now also planning to offer games on the television. As a first step, the company has therefore now released its own iOS and iPadOS app, which is intended to serve as a game controller. Interestingly enough, it appeared before its suitable counterpart for TV sets.
“Coming Soon on Netflix”
According to Apple’s App Store, the Netflix Game Controller is used to control games on the largest screen in the house. “Coming soon to Netflix. Play games on your TV with the Netflix Game Controller. This game controller app pairs with your TV and allows you to play games on Netflix with your phone or mobile device,” the Description.
The app itself consists of a virtual joystick and a total of four buttons – a large “A” button and “B”, “X” and “Y”. The minimum requirement is iOS 15 or iPadOS 15, i.e. an operating system version before the (currently still) current iOS 16 or iPadOS 16. Without a suitable counterpart on a television, the software is currently completely useless.
Is cloud gaming coming from Netflix?
So far, Netflix has only offered a selection of mobile games and has cooperated with some well-known developers. Netflix has not yet revealed which smart TVs, smart TV sticks, game consoles or streaming boxes the new service will work with. The company only announces that “Netflix Games on TV is in a beta phase” – but it is not public. “Some devices may not be supported at this time,” says the only app.
Netflix has not yet commented on the new TV game service or the controller application itself. However, it is clear that Netflix is interested in cloud gaming. It would probably be easier to implement on a television than to use the respective platform natively. That would then be reminiscent of services like OnLive. So far, the mobile games can be used with a regular Netflix subscription. Here the company could create subscription gradations if necessary. Most recently, Netflix was able to increase customer numbers again after account sharing was severely prohibited.
