Apple creates its own playback option for 3D films on the Vision Pro. In the second beta of the visionOS SDK, developer Steve Moser has one relevant notice found. The TV app in it contains a “Play 3D” function for films and series. Apparently, however, it cannot be activated in simulator mode – and suitable content would also be missing.

Apple could thus market 3D content via its TV app for the mixed reality headset right from the start – from the TV+ range as well as via the iTunes Movie Store. Alternatively, chargeable Apple TV channels could also offer three-dimensional content. The Vision Pro is particularly good for playback thanks to its high-resolution micro-OLED displays. The level of realism is high, at least according to journalists who were hands-on with the headset.
Apple is preparing at least one new series of content. As a trade journalist wrote in June, Apple’s Monsterverse series from Legendary Entertainment be filmed immediately in 3D. It’s about Japanese monsters like Godzilla. The show will be titled Monarch: Legacy of Monsters. Apple had already secured the corresponding rights last year, which the entertainment group Toho holds. In addition to Godzilla, the monster verse also includes the giant gorilla King Kong.
Conversion like 4K?
Moser hopes that Apple will take a similar approach to 3D as it did to the transition to 4K content. Here it was possible to upgrade libraries. The Vision Pro is likely to fuel demand for 3D content significantly, even if the $3,500 device will initially only be of interest to wealthy early adopters.
The Vision Pro will initially be available in the USA in early 2024. Apple has not yet given any information as to when Europe will follow. Developers are currently starting to build new apps or adapt iPad and iPhone software to the headset. Apple is now also issuing a developer kit as a loaner. Alternatively, so-called developer labs are also held on site at Apple, but in Germany only at the Munich location.
